In 1549 Dunboy castle (and himself) was accidentally blown up by Dermot 0'Sullivan Beare. The castle was restored, and then in 1602 Sir George Carew of Britain besieged the castle with an army of 4,000 men. 143 members of Donal (Cam) O'Sullivan Beare's army gallantly defended Dunboy against the aggressors for 11 days. But on June 18, 1602, the castle was overcome, all of its defenders slaughtered, and the castle was once again blown up.
